Traditional Recipe: Pastel de Hoja - Get festive with Ketty Delights

Happy Holidays! We're just 2 days away from Christmas and I know you all are getting ready with the food. Today I want to share with you a traditional recipe from Dominican Republic I make every year for my kids, it's very easy to make and so flavorful.


For the mass you will need:

5 green bananas

2 pounds white yautia

1 1/2 pound squash

2 green bananas

2 ripe bananas (optional)

1/2 cup of evaporated milk

2 tablespoons of salt

1/2 cup of oil with annatto or achiote

For the chicken or beef filling:

2 chicken breasts without skin or bones or ground meat (beef)

1 chopped onion

1 tablespoon of salt

1/2 chopped green pepper or 1 tablespoon of homemade seasoning

1 garlic clove minced

1 tablespoon of oil with annatto or achiote

Salt and pepper


Clean all the Banana Leafs with a humid towel.


Mix all the ingredients for the dough in a big bowl.


Let the mass rest while you mix the ingredients for the filling.

Mix and cook all the ingredients for the filling and then set aside until you start assembling the pastel.


Take a banana leaf and put 1 scoop of the mass in the middle of the leaf, spread it until you have the shape of an oval.


Add the filling in the middle of the mass and then wrap your pastel

Cook for approximately 40 minutes, unwrap pastel and serve with your favorite hot sauce or ketchup.
